The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age

Good

EA's most ambitious LotR title boasts fine visuals and serviceable gameplay, but its story, characters, and role-playing are a bit shallow. Read Review

Experience the first console role-playing game set in J.R.R. Tolkien's fabled Middle-Earth universe with The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. In it, players will be able to travel in the wake of the Fellowship with a unique structure that allows them to explore their own path while periodically intersecting with the major events of the films. Encounter the demonic Balrog in the mines of Moria, defend the fallen city of Osgiliath, or try to destroy Helm's Deep -- the choice is yours. Players can even customize their own hero or villain and upgrade them with an in-depth skill tree system that will increase their special abilities.

I know what some of you are thinking. You're all, "Here it is. EA is slapping The Lord of the Rings on a Japanese-style role-playing game (RPG). There's no way an American developer can do this right." And while The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age does indeed appear to be Final Fantasy X-3: Gimli, it's shaping up to be a really strong RPG that makes excellent use of the source material. Furthermore, the team behind it contains several ex-Square talents. There's a very good chance that The Third Age will be one of the best Japanese-style RPGs made by westerners. Read More »
