Some games are just obviously mediocre. Others give you a little bit of hope before descending into the doldrums. Stolen is the latter. While the idea of taking stealth away from burly military men and personifying it in the form of a buxom female art thief is an interesting one, completely mediocre execution on every level renders this game a missed opportunity for innovation and entertainment.
Anya Romanov is the sexy lady thief in question. With an acerbic tongue and a pack full of gizmos, she makes a decent enough heroine. She's got a helpful informant on her headset who feeds her (and, by extension, you) all sorts of useful info about mission objectives and even your immediate surroundings. In return, you stuff her magical infinite fanny pack full of priceless works of art and snap photos of things which sparkle to call your attention to them.
Stolen's bag of tricks closely resembles other popular entries in the genre. Anya can hack computer terminals, pick locks, hide in the shadows, and sneak up behind unsuspecting guards and pick their pockets -- or silence them. Being a thief, she can even crack safes. The gadgets you have range from useful (suppressing security cameras, creating decoy sounds to attract guards) to gimmicky (a dart that tags guards and lets you see their cone of vision on your mini-map, or awesome-looking but pretty useless sonar goggles that let you peek into the next room and see if it's safe to enter.)
Anya, however, has a particularly irritating flaw. She has a complete lack of offensive prowess. This lady is relegated to waiting ... and waiting ... and waiting ... in the shadows, for an opportune moment to dash out and get a task done or surprise a guard, because once she engages in combat, it's time to be annoyed. He shoots, at point blank range, and you smack him in the face till he falls over. If you get tagged but a few times, even from fists, you're toast. Once he's been down for only a moment, he wakes up and buzzes his superiors, creating an alert. If you need to get a simple task done in a small room, it's probably best to just repeatedly knock him out, though. Stealth! Strategy! Yeah, right.
