Time to get a PSP, Metal Gear Solid online fans.
On April 2nd,
Konami will be pulling the plug on its
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence servers for North America. The remix of the hit
Metal Gear Solid 3 was released in the US on March 14th, 2006, so fans will have the chance to celebrate the one-year anniversary of
Subsistence's on-line play before it all goes dark. The following message can be seen on Konami's support site:
The last day of online service for Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence in North America will be April 2nd.
Konami sincerely thanks all of the Subsistence online community for their dedication to the game and support of the Metal Gear Solid series.
The Metal Gear online tradition of stealth, action and team play continues on the PSP system with Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops with all-new characters, levels and modes of play - don't miss this incredible evolution of Metal Gear Online.
Although our own review critiqued
Subsistence's control scheme, it also pointed out that "...[
Subsistence's] main attraction is likely Online Mode, which takes
MGS3's distinctive action and brings it online for up to eight players at once." Maybe the loyal fans will find a technical workaround for this, but other than that, it's time to pick up a PSP if you want to play any
MGS online. What drove this decision is a bigger question, and one we'll hopefully be able to answer at some point.
