Prelude
The Prelude level sits in the snowy wastes of The Arctic and introduces players to plucky Lyra Belacqua, Pantalaimon & Iorek. Lyra is a spirited young girl embarking on an epic adventure. Her companion Pan, short for Pantalaimon, is an external manifestation of her soul in the shape of animal. Pan can change his shape to help Lyra progress through difficult terrain. As a wildcat, for example, he can help Lyra negotiate vertical terrain and other obstacles. Iorek is a powerful Panserbjorne, or Armored Ice Bear, whose incredible strength allows him to smash through just about anything. This tutorial level allows the player to familiarize themselves with each of these characters' abilities as they fight their way through packs of wolves, avoid falling stalactites and explore ice bound ships while trying to rescue a child kidnapped by the sinister Gobblers.
Trollesund
It is in the bustling town of Trollesund that Lyra gains a powerful ally and new friend on her adventure. Although The Prelude level introduces Iorek as a playable character, it is here where they first meet properly. Though this lively port of Lapland provides Lyra with plenty of interesting places to explore and people to meet, it is not without its dangers. Lyra must help Iorek re-gain his armor by sneaking into the Magisterium. She will need all her stealth and cunning to avoid the town police and help Iorek escape the clutches of the authorities.
